VOLUNTEER Registration begins 03/01/18

 We'd like to thank our hard working and dedicated volunteers who make the #SFStairClimb possible. Without you, we would not be the powerful and memorable event that it is, and we are grateful to you. All volunteers will get a lunch and a commemorative #SFSTAIRCLIMB T-Shirt. Training and orientation will be provided by the event staff prior to the opening of registration. If additional training or orientation is required, you will be notified prior to the event.

Pre Registration / On Site Registration & Check In

7AM – 1:00PM (12 volunteers)

Pre Registration or On-Site Registration

Description: This volunteer assignment is fast paced and hectic! All climbers, volunteers, and media report to Check-in to receive participant materials and directions.

As a Registration & Check-in volunteer, you will:

  1. Identify and distribute participant materials: Race bib, t-shirt, etc
  2. Ensure completion of Participant Release of Liability/Waiver and other registration forms
  3. Provide information about climb/festival layout and program
  4. Direct members of the Press, VIPs, Dignitaries, and Vendors to appropriate personnel

Volunteers need to be able to handle pressure, answer climber questions and follow directions. This is an adult position, mostly sitting and ideally suited for a volunteer who has been a participant or volunteered at a race check-in previously. Orientation and training will be provided on the day of the event.

 Ideal Age Range / Groups / Abilities: 16+ Years of age.

Bag Check

2 Shifts: 7:00AM – 11:30AM/11:00AM-3:00PM (6 Volunteers each shift)

If you want to volunteer the entire time (i.e. 7am to 3pm) you can do that – just let us know when we contact you for shifts.

Description: This volunteer assignment is fast paced and hectic! Climbers and volunteers may wish to have personal items secured in the bag check area. Volunteers must work quickly, courteously and accurately to bag and secure personal items.

Ideal Age Range / Groups / Abilities: 16+ Years of age.

Event Logistics Marshall

6:30AM – 3:00PM (15 Volunteers)

Description: Event Logistics Marshals are the eyes and ears of the event. You will help direct traffic and keep the flow of cars/pedestrians moving safely.

Reports To: Event Producer, Course Managers and Climb Command Staff.


  1. Direct traffic for around street closures
  2. Make sure only vehicles with parking passes are parked in our signed/metered zones
  3. Being the eyes and ears of the event and alerting emergencies to Medical Team personnel.

Ideal Age Range / Groups / Abilities: Retired or active Firefighters / Police Officers / EMS / Military, or College Adults interested in a career in public safety, or members of local community groups CERT / Reserve Firefighters, recruits.

Volunteer ALS

6:30AM – 12:00PM / 11:30AM-3:00PM

(6 Volunteers each shift- (4) Roamers & (2) Base Camp Tent)

Description: This volunteer position is for EMT/Paramedics ONLY. ALS/ BLS support at various stages of the course (roaming the course, as well as in 1st aid base tent)

Ideal Age Range / Groups / Abilities: Active EMT/ Paramedic.

Event Support

6:00AM – 12:00PM (10 Volunteers to help with load-in and event)

11:00AM - 4:00PM (8 Volunteers to help with event and load-out)

Description: Event Support is the muscle of the #SFSTAIRCLIMB. If it needs to be moved, lifted, set up, directed or assisted we rely on you. Volunteers are primarily charged with helping load-in and set up the event, as well as with moving ice, water, etc as needed throughout the event. This job requires standing for prolonged periods, bending and lifting 20+ lbs.

Ideal Age Range / Groups / Abilities:  High School Youth, College Adults, and Mature Adults in good health are good volunteers for this assignment. High enthusiasm is required.

Course Motivator

7:30AM – 12:00PM (20 – 30 volunteers)

Description: Course Motivators are the life of the climb. You’ll be cheering the climbers as they begin their journey. The climbers are going to be tired, so they need you to help them keep up the pace! Feel free to bring your own cowbells, pompons, and good attitude and enthusiasm to motivate the climbers.

Reports To: Course Motivators report to Course Marshals and Climb Command Staff.

Ideal Age Range / Groups / Abilities: Elementary School Youth, Jr. High School Youth, High School Youth, College Adults, and Mature Adults in good health are good volunteers for this assignment. High enthusiasm is required.
